2010 Indoor Flying

Author: Bill Cousins

We fly indoors through the winter months in a school gym, to keep our fingers sharp for the summer months. At least in the gym there is no wind and it's warm. We always have a good crowd and there is always somebody bringing something new to fly. Either it's a scratch built electric flyer, micro plane or heli. It's a lot of fun and the atmosphere is always friendly and very enjoyable. We have 15 minute intervals so everybody has a chance to fly; example, slow flyers, fast micro flyers, small heli's and so on. I think there is more and more indoor flying now, and if you ever get a chance in your area to fly indoors I highly recommend it. This especially goes for new flyers, as this is a great opportunity to learn the basics and get some stick time on a slow flyer like the Parkzone Vapor before training with an instructor in the spring at a club with bigger planes.

There has been up to 8 vapors or more flying in the gym {2.4} and let me say, you really have to watch your own plane or you won't remember which one it is. There are always other things to do such as landing and take-offs on tables, flying around pylons, flying under a string attached to two uprights and so on - you can use your own imagination. I always wanted to build and bring a good size styrofoam aircraft carrier in to land on.

We fly once a week for three hours and at times it seems it just is not long enough. Three years ago their wasn't very much out there to fly other than cheap foam flyers and three channel helicopters from box stores which weren't all that good. Now there is everything under the sun available to buy. It is mind boggling and I look at my indoor planes and heli's and I think to myself, did I buy all these? Oh my, it takes me two trips just to get everything into the van to go flying in the gym once a week, and then when I get home everything has to come out. What we do just to have fun eh? Oh well life is short enough as it is.

As I said before, indoor flying is a great place to start out if you have never flown before and with the right plane {Vapor} and people there to help, you will be flying in no time. There are always friendly flyers there to help you get started, and give you the information and support that you might need.

It's getting more and more popular for clubs to acquire a place to fly throughout the winter months and if is possible I highly recommend it. Now that more and more small micro planes and heli's are being manufactured, it's even more fun than before. I'm just wondering what else will be out there before next winter.

So fly safe and enjoy yourself, and remember - it's one of the best hobbies you can pursue.
