Kamloops Model Airplane Society Fun Fly - May 15th, 2005

Author: Luella Cousins

With rain threatening all day, people still braved the elements and KMAS had a nice turn out for their first event of the year. The rain held off until about 11:00 when it rained for about half an hour and then let the sun come out again.

All three Kamloops clubs were represented with Steve Bennett, Dean Obyashi and Don Lurkins from High Country Flyers in attendance. Ron Mattson, Ken Martin, Bill Cousins, Fred Kaltenbach and Ed Picard were there from Sky Rangers Model Flyers. There were fliers from 100 Mile House and they informed us that they just got a new field set up so they are back flying again.

Hamburgers, hot dogs, coffee and pop were on the menu and they were sure tasty. The smell of food wafted through the site and everyone gathered around for their lunch. This was about the time that it rained so the timing was almost perfect.

Lester Koneman from Lester's Hobbies in Nakusp came up to the field with his van and trailer full of goodies for the guys to buy. I saw a few radios, a flight simulator, a micro size plane and radio, along with plenty of bags of small parts go past me. It was good of Lester to come down for one day so hopefully it was worth his while.

Lots of the general public came out to watch the planes and the kids were thoroughly enjoying the aerobatic flying of Dean Obyashi. He even had his electric Funtana doing things I thought would be impossible. There is something to be said about a great pilot.
No day is complete without a crash it seems, but the mishaps were minor. No plane was completely lost. The wind came up and snapped a wing off a small electric flyer but nothing that couldn't be repaired. Unfortunately the Spitfire got caught in a gust of wind and did a nose stand that snapped the cowl and broke the motor mount, I believe. It too can be repaired. One fellow landed in the wind and had a couple of ugly bounces but only lost his landing gear. Relatively minor mishaps considering the gusts that came up later in the day.

The People's Choice Award was won by Terry Faulkner of the KMAS club with his very nicely done dual engine float plane. I hear that we will see it fly at Sandy Point in June. Terry MC'd the event and did a very nice job.

Steve Bennett was telling me about his Stumunktra. It is a "new" plane that incorporates the fuselage of the Stuka, the wings of the Chipmunk and the cowl of an Extra. Steve swears it is one of the nicest planes he has ever flown. He certainly did a nice job of putting it all together. (see photos)

I believe the oldest flier there was Fred Kaltenbach of the Sky Rangers who is 82 and still manages to get out flying. We will be running a feature on Fred later on so watch for the low down on him.

Thanks to Greg Lewarne, president and John Edwards (co-ordinator for the event) and the Kamloops Model Airplane Society members for making everyone feel right at home. Nice job!!
