2005 Big Bird Fly-In

Author: Luella Cousins

On July 9th & 10th, the High Country Flyers of Kamloops hosted their ninth Big Bird event with flyers coming from Trail, 100 Mile House, Alberta and the coast. The weather on Saturday was windy and cold when the sun hid, but you know flyers, if there is any way they can fly, they do. Sunday provided better weather for spectators and flyers alike.

High Country Flyers has their field on Morrison Ranch and has a 700 foot grass runway that is second to none. The club members do a lot of work at their flying field to keep it in top notch condition. This year the club invited the Paddlewheeler Lions from Logan Lake to run the concession. They provided lots of hamburgers, hot dogs and a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. Saturday night was a pot luck supper for those who purchased tickets.

There were lots of prizes drawn for which included kits, Model Airplane News subscriptions, a hand-crafted Wright Brothers wind vane crafted and donated by Ron Elliott (one of the members of High Country Flyers) as well as various other related items.

Ernie Kidd did his usual bang-up job as M.C. of the event and the event director was Ron Flack who should be acknowledged for the great event.

There were some great flights for the spectators as well as some demonstrations for everyone. The Katana 37% scale model was flown by Sean Jansen and he did some aerobatic flying using the smoke on his airplane and wowing the audience. Harley Hughson flew a mantis and demonstrated the pattern flying that is involved in flying at a scale event.

It was great to see John Kristensen of Kelowna back flying at the field. A fly-in doesn't seem the same without his participation.

Dan Idorn and Dave Collis also provided some spectacular flying to an enthusiastic crowd. Another eager showman was Stacy Connacher out of Trail.

On Sunday, Dean Wichman of Kamloops came up with his jet and provided a show with it but had some minor trouble with the landing gear when he set down. Not to be deterred, he returned to Kamloops and came back with a second jet and provided another flight for the crowd.

The other pilots that showed their prowess in the sport with flights by Roly Worsfold, Dean Obyashi, Mike Allman, Jean Belair, Rob Atton, Dan Idorn, Bob Hill and Helmut Kihszl.

Despite a few nose-down landings due mainly to the wind, there was only one notable crash which didn't seem to be repairable. Our sympathies to the pilot.

All in all, this is one event that you don't want to miss. I overheard one pilot this year that stated this was his first year at this particular event but he wasn't going to miss it in the future. That about says it all and would be echoed by all in attendance.

If you have never been, or if you keep returning, we'll see you there next year.
