1st Annual British Columbia Scale Classic
Author: Luella Cousins
On August 11th through August 13th, High Country Flyers field was host to the 1st annual British Columbia Scale Classic. The contest director, Roly Worsfold, is no stranger to scale flying as he has attended events in the United States and Alberta prior to putting together this extravaganza. It was because of his enthusiasm for the event and his love of flying that he was able to convince the clubs in the interior of BC to put together this event.
Roly, along with his wife, Diane put together an outstanding venue for the weekend. Flyers can from as far east as St. Albert, just outside of Edmonton to as far north as Prince George, as far west as Vancouver Island and as far south as Oregon. Two Scale Masters members along with one of their wives flew up in their private plane to attend and lend their expertise. Thank you Roger & Caroline and Dennis.
Roly, along with our zone director Doug McMillan enlisted several people to step up to the plate and get their judging certification for the event. It was a challenge met by people in all three local clubs as well as Kelowna, Salmon Arm and others. Mike Allman from Vernon co-chaired the event with Roly. Mike has lots of experience flying in various events and is always a joy to watch.
Friday afternoon was the static judging and we got through the seventeen planes entered in good time. A few were a little nervous as this was the first competition they were judging but the pilots and the judges were both satisfied with the results.
Saturday morning led to the flight judging and a great display by all pilots in the competition. Two great ladies, one from Kelowna and one from Kamloops, shared the duties of the computer to keep track of all the results. The flight line bosses, Bill Cousins, Wilf Studer and Ron Elliott kept the area safe and the flights going on in good time. What a hot day for everyone to be standing out in the sun - the judges and the flight line bosses couldn't get into the shade like the rest of us.
I know that I will miss some of the judges names but I will try to remember them all as they deserve their due - Christine Meroniuk, Doug McMillan, Michael Bacon, Jim McKee, Dennis Mackey, Mark Bertuzzi, Roger (from Oregon), as well as the static judges - Ted Russell for craftsmanship, Doug McMillan for outline and myself for color and markings.
In order to help out the pilots with mishaps and be available for any other purchases the pilots made, Lester's Hobbies was also present again.

The pilot's choice award went to Roly Worsfold for his Cub and when you look at the photos, you can see how he earned it.
Friday night at the field was pizza and pop night but on Saturday we fired up the barbecue and served hamburgers and hot dogs. Everyone involved in the event lent a hand with the selling of 50/50 tickets, judging, cooking, data entry, what have you. On Saturday evening there was Beef on a Bun prepared by none other than Roly and Diane. The rest of the meal was pot luck but there was lots of food - no one went away hungry.
There were a couple of good looking planes that were raffled off and the ticket sales were good as everyone wanted the planes. Also in the raffle was an engine but I don't have the details o it except that Greg Lewarne of Kamloops won it. Michael Bacon won the P40 Warhawk ARF and yours truly won the P51 Mustang ARF. My circle of friends became very large after I won the plane. My only problem was fitting the box into the car - I almost had to make my husband walk home.
All the volunteers had their names put into a draw and there were plenty of prizes for this worthy group. Prizes ranged from gift certificates for plane accessories, pilots for aircraft, videos, magazines and books to some scarves for the female persuasion.
The pinnacle point of the event was when it was resoundingly echoed that we can't wait for next year - the 2nd Annual British Columbia Scale Classic.
A job well done Roly, Diane and Mike!!
