Dufferin Electric Only Field Grand Opening

Author: Bill Cousins

Mayi 13th, 2006 saw the Grand Opening of the Dufferin Field in Kamloops as an electric only field. Ernie Kidd, Master of Ceremonies welcomed Doug MacMillan, our Zone Director along with Steve Hughes from Vernon, Assistant Zone Director for our region; Tina Lange, Acting Mayor for the City of Kamloops; Doug Burt, Canadian Electric Flight Chairman; as well as members from all of the local clubs in Kamloops and Vernon. Mark Betuzzi our Radio Spectrum Committee chair person, Ernie Kidd and Don Hiebert, and High Country Flyers were instrumental in getting this Electric Only Park off the ground. All three are from the club and Mark is also a member of Kamloops Model Airplane Society at Heffley Creek. Tina Lange { acting mayor } officially opened the field.

The sun was shining, the weather mild and the pilots lined up to take their turn in the sky. For those who didn't like the sun, MAAC had their tent set up and they could escape to some shade.

A lot of interest has already been shown by the locals in the area. Now they can sit on their balconies and watch their own private air show. The community has been very supportive and when the pilots are at the field to fly, the public takes care not to cross the field or intrude where it is unsafe to do so. As the field is close to a path leading to Kenna Cartwright Park where the residents walk their dogs and hike at their leisure, this cooperation is imperative to the success of the field. The City of Kamloops helped High Country Flyers whose club oversees the field, to prepare the land and allowed the usage for flying. Another great stride in the acceptance of flying in our community. Parks and Recreation Board of the City of Kamloops had the airstrip built for the club which again shows the level of support being received for the hobby.

Congratulations to all of those involved and sincere thanks must be given to the City of Kamloops Parks and Recreation Department for all of their support. Special thanks to Ernie Kidd for acting as a liason with the City as he knew the right people to contact to make this a reality.

The field is complete from the paved runway to a new frequency board erected to help everyone keep track of those who wish to fly. A first class location for flying. This is a Model Aeronautics Association of Canada {MAAC} santioned field and must belong to MAAC to fly there. There is a small fee for the MAAC card that covers you with insurance but the enjoyment is unlimited.

If you plan to visit Kamloops and you fly electric planes, this is a stop you must make. The fellowship found here is second to none and you may find you have an audience of locals.

If your out of town and want to fly there, { remember your MAAC card } the address is Dufferin Electric Park 1880 Hillside Drive Kamloops B.C. right across from the travel centre.

Keep your wings level and your landings soft! Hope to see you there.
