High Country Flyers Big Bird 2006

Author: Luella Cousins

The Big Bird hosted by High Country Flyers was, as always, a very enjoyable event. This year was the 10th annual Big Bird. Participants came from as far away as Vancouver Island and Alberta. Although attendance was down a bit this year, the event still turned out to be good.

In the absence of Ernie Kidd who was on holidays, Norm Bryson took over the duties of Master of Ceremonies and did a commendable job. The Paddlewheelers Lions Club from Kamloops was on site to serve burgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and other munchies.

Lester of Lester's Hobbies was set up at the event and gave everyone a chance to purchase supplies.

Saturday was the nicest day of the two with the rainshowers holding off until the flying was done for the day. A couple of small wind funnels came up and raised a couple of tents off the ground. It took Lesters tent and blew it up against a large motorhome before blowing it all the way over. The motorhome suffered a small amount of damage but there were no injuries and no major harm to plane or property.

With the high cost of gas and the extreme heat the Kamloops area has been having, it could account for the lower numbers attending. In terms of the number attending and their opinion, the week-end was a success.
