2006 Vernon Labor Day Fly-in

Author: Luella Cousins

The week-end proved to be excellent weather despite the haze hanging over the field due to the fires south of the border. Each year that Vernon hosts their annual fly-in, it seems to get better. Gas prices didn't stop the regulars from showing up at this event with old planes and new. What a variety of planes there was.

People attended from 100 Mile House, Vancouver Island and the US. The majority of the participants were from the Interior and as you can see from the photos, there were plenty of planes in attendance as well.

Dean Wichman from Kamloops wowed the crowd with his helicopter flying - some of the best I have seen first hand. It was exhilarating to see some of the manouvers he did. As many people will attest, it is harder to work a helicopter like that than it is with a plane.

A lot of fine flying manouvers came from some of the other guys there as well including Lorne Hansen, Mike Allman, Roly Worsfold, Dan Idorn and many others.

Friar Truck's was on site with his mobile restaurant and as usual, everything from the bacon and egg buns to the burgers and fries was top notch.

The prizes were second to none and the 50/50 draws were enough to line your pockets with some good old fashioned cash. Friendships were renewed and new ones made as well as finding material for more tall tales of flying. Lester's Hobbies was also in attendance for all three days bringing all kinds of good stuff with him; and believe me he was always busy. He always brings a good selection of parts and planes. People's Choice Award went to Roly Worsfold's big Tiger Moth, and Lorne Hansen came second with his P-40 Warhawk

Another successful year for Vernon and kudos to all of the club members for making everyone feel welcome and providing a fantastic venue for flying. Although we only attended on the Sunday, I was told that the entire week-end was one for the books.

If you are ever in the area, look up the club and go fly with them. It will be a highlight for you.
