2006 Fall Float Fly at Shuswap Lake

Author: Bill Cousins

Wow! What a week! The Shuswap Aero Modelers hosted the fall Sandy Point Float Fly on the beautiful Shuswap Lake on September 8th to the 10th, 2006. It is usually a three or four day event but more often it begins on the Tuesday. This event follows the Vernon Fun Fly that is very well attended on the September long week-end. Many of the flyers from that event gravitate to Shuswap Lake and start their float flying early.

The week was sunny and warm. The only miserable day was Saturday as it rained and was a bit chilly. Then Sunday turned out sunny and warm again.

There were at least 92 registered pilots and a good variety of float planes. The lake was quite low so there was lots of beach and warm sand. A person could fly when his frequency was clear and afterwards, sit in his chair with his feet in the sand. Sometimes there were as many as eight planes in the air at one time. People's Choice Award went to a Balsa USA Ona Third Scale Ercoupe, this plane also had a beautiful scale interior. One of the top prizes was a JR complete radio system and the person who won a week ago at the Vernon Fun Fly In { a beautiful arf and a .91 4-stroke } won the radio. Now that is what I call good fortune.
Lester's Hobbies was there as usual, just in case of a crash or if you had your eye on a kit or two.

This is one of the premiere float flies in the interior and if you get a chance to fly or even if you are a spectator, it is surely worth a trip to watch this event. If you want to try float flying and I highly recommend it - you won't be disappointed. Personally I would rather float fly than fly off wheels.

If you like to rent a cabin it is very reasonable and there is also a very good concession on hand that prepares some very good food.

Thanks goes out to the members of the Shuswap Aero Modellers for putting on such a great event. Thanks also to Dave Milton {of Slocan Floats } for providing the photos as I forgot my camera this time around.
