2008 BC Hobby Expo/Symposium

Author: Bill Cousins

The members of the Vernon RC Aeromodelers Society invited everyone to attend the first BC Hobby Expo/Symposium for an experience not to be missed. The event was held on April 5th, 2008 from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon for a reasonable admission fee that included listening to four guest speakers and being able to tour the displays. This was held at the Halina Centre in Vernon.

Displays included local clubs, Vernon Aermomodelers members, HO Model Train display, Flight Simulator, scale train laoyout, DVD station, Swap N Shop. Among the vendors were Lester's Hobbies, Cory & Karen Gerein, Donna Ziola, Kelly Norwood, CRC Products, Kelly's Caboose, Moorefield Collectables, Air Quest Heli Cam, Absolute RC and Murray Holland.

The guest speakers included Roly Worsfold who spoke on scale building and flying. Dean Wichmann addressed the 2.4 "wave" of the future. Rod McRae spoke on the field of electrics and Ivan Pettigrew gave two seminars, one on building lite, building right and the other on aerodynamics in model design.

A raffle was held which had a top prize of $500.00, second place was $150.00 gift certificate to Lester's Hobbies and third prize was a $100.00 gift certificate for supper.

There was also car racing held outside for most of the day. Some flying demos were available to those interested in observing.

The kitchen was set up for hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks. The food was good and the volunteers were kept busy.

There was a large static display of planes and boats from within the region. The miniature train display from Kelly's Caboose was certainly an eye-catcher and shows what can be done with a little imagination.

All profits from the event were donated to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation in conjunction with 105.7 Sun FM's Have a Heart Radio-thon to help purchase a Philips Fetal Heart Monitor.

This was the first attempt to host a hobby expo along with the symposium and it appeared to be very well received.

Thanks go out to the members of Vernon RC Aeromodelers Society for hosting another first class event for which they are so well known. The generosity and openness of the club always invites visitors back time and again.
