2008 Grindrod Air Force Society 32nd Annual Shuswap Fun Fly

Author: Bill Cousins

The 32nd annual spring flyin hosted by the Grindrod Air Force Society was held May 31st to June 8th, 2008 at the Sandy Point Resort close to Salmon Arm. This is the longest running float fly in Western Canada.

The weather was fifty fifty as much of the time it was rather windy or raining with a few sunny periods mixed in between, just enough time for a few flights. There were a lot of pilots there but not sure of the number but a good turnout despite the weather. The lake was up from the snow melt so there was not much beach available but what there was, everybody seemed to have enough room. There was a good selection of different float planes there from Cubs to biplanes, mid wing and low wing, two strokes, four stroke and gas engines.

One of the interesting planes there was the return of the Spruce Goose with its eight engines. What a sight to see and it even flew well. I believe it has OS46 two stroke engines for power. It sure looks impressive in the air.

Quite a number of float flyers were camped for the whole week and the rest came for the three day weekend. Most left Sunday night with the remaining flyers leaving on Monday.

This has always been a relaxing place to float fly with enough room on the water and on shore to relax after a flight. You can sit in a comfortable chair and have a coffee and talk about the next float plane to build.

Thanks goes out to the Grindrod Air Force for again putting on a very good float fly that I am sure everyone enjoyed.
