2008 British Columbia Scale Classic

Author: Bill Cousins

The fourth annual 2008 Scale Masters Qualifier was hosted by Vernon Radio Control Aeromodelers Society from July 18th to July 20th, 2008. The three day event is one step to get to the Scale Masters in the U.S. later in the year.

The static judging was done on Friday despite the windy conditions. Saturday and Sunday were set aside for the flying event. The winds caused a bit of problem for the practise flights on Friday but the other two days were beautiful, temperatures around 33 degrees celsius and no wind to speak of.

It was quite hot on the field for the judges, pilots, callers and the air boss. There were four rounds of flights on Saturday and two on Sunday, making up six rounds altogether. With the four rounds on Saturday the flying did not finish up until around six thirty.

There were no catastrophic crashes, only a couple of mishaps and all in all it was a very safe weekend.

Lester's Hobbies was present as usual, making sure everyone was catered to for their supplies. As a result of his presence there was no down time. He also provided a $600 gift certificate for one of the top prizes. There were an abundance of prizes including a Real Flight Simulator, kits and other merchandise which totaled to a good sum of money.

Sisters Catering Truck was present to provide cold drinks, coffee, hamburgers and hot dogs.

The BC Scale Masters Classic event was a tremendous sucess with 29 entries. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves even though some did not make it to the top three finishing spots.

Thanks to Vernon Aeromodelers for hosting the event. This is a nice field and centrally located for everyone to get to. As for me, I enjoyed being there as the Air Boss. This was my fourth year in this position and it is an accomplishment keeping everybody safe and happy.
