Shuswap Lake Aero Modellers Invitational Fun Fly

Author: Luella Cousins

On Sunday, August 7th, we attended the Shuswap Lake Aero Modellers Invitational Fun Fly. The club site is located a few kilometres from Sorrento, close to golfing and to the fire department. They have a nice field and a great set up there. You can see the highway from their site but you can't see their site from the highway.

Members got busy about 12:00 and barbecued up some hot dogs and hamburgers, which I must admit, were very tasty. One of the members wives brought a huge tin of cookies for those with a sweet tooth.

The tent roof was up to protect the spectators from the sun which was very intense. There was a great gathering of people there and I saw Larry Christenson, Betty Ann Northup, Mike Allman and Lorne Hansen from Vernon. Greg Lewarne, Rob Dover, Christine Meroniuk, Jacques Chave & his wife and John Edwards from the Kamloops Model Airplane Society were in attendance.

Doug McMillan of the SLAM club took up his plane with a banner welcoming us to S.L.A.M. The club members were all very welcoming and pleased to have such a good turn out for the event. I heard one of the wives comment that it was the best turnout they had ever had. If their hospitality is always this grand, the event will only grow.

As much as I know the flyers dislike the wind as it make flying a little more difficult, due to the intense temperatures, the breeze was most welcome. And then there are the flyers like Mike Allman who make flying seem so effortless.

All in all, it was a good day and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves. We are looking forward to attending again next year.
